HOPE FOR ASIAN BOY AFTER DONOR MATCH

A two-year-old whose parents appealed for more people from the Asian community to register as bone marrow donors is to be given the transplant he desperately needs.

The family of Gaurav Bains, of Tipton, West Midlands, went to great lengths to raise awareness of Gaurav's condition in a bid to encourage more Asian people to sign up to the Register.   The appeal resulted in a ten-fold increase in the number joining the bone marrow register. 

Organ matching is likely to be closer when the ethnicity of the donor and recipient are the same -  27% of patients on the transplant waiting list from are from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, yet there continues to be a real shortage of organ donors from these communities.
